What colour is Antique Black?

Antique Black is a Black Japan painted which gives off a much more traditional mottled finish.

 

What Are Matt Black products made from?

Most of the Antique Black items will be made with a Iron base material, there are some exceptions which are being made from stainless steel, Zinc alloy or Mazac. These products have had aBlack Japan paint applied to them. Please check individual products to see what base material they are made from.

 

How is the Antique Black finish produced?

The product is cleaned then put through an industrial oven where aBlack Japan paint is then applied and "baked" on the the product. This produces a very hard wearing finish which also help protect and maintain the finish.

 

Are allAntique Black items the same colour and pattern?

No, some Black finishes are Powder coated which give a much smoother finish and some are Black Japan painted which gives off a much more traditional mottled finish.

Are Antique Black products suitable for outside use?

Yes, altough most of the Antique Black items are made from raw iron which is a ferrous alloy and will rust when fitted outside. The Black Japan paint povides a weather resistant coat which makes it very suitable for outdoor use. However the paint coating will eventually breakdown.

 

What happens when the paint coat starts to breakdown?

The iron will now start to become exposed to the air and will start to oxidise, and sometimes flake away.

 

How to clean and maintain Antique Black products

Matt Black products are protected by an hard wearing coat and under normal circumstances should give many years of service. These products should be cleaned regularly with a soft cloth and wiped over with a wax based furniture polish ideally a beeswax, but products like “Pledge” and “Mr Sheen” work well too. Regular cleaning with furniture polish will help protect and maintain the coat.

Do not use any form of metal cleaner on new Antique Black products as this will damage the black Japan paint coating.
