What colour is Matt Black?

Matt Black is a deep and dark powder coated black colour with a smooth dull finish.

A matt finish simply refers to a material that is dull and non-shiny, because matt finishes absorb light rather than reflecting it. This means that they mask any inconsistencies or other little flaws in the metal making them invisible to the naked eye. Therefore, Matt Black is simply a black finish that is non-shiny.

How To Clean Matt Black?

Our Matt Black products are manufactured with a protective hard-wearing coat that under normal circumstances should see them at their best for many years. Matt Black products should be cleaned regularly with a soft cloth and wiped over with a wax based furniture polish ideally beeswax, but products like “Pledge” and “Mr Sheen” work well too. Regular cleaning with furniture polish will help preserve and maintain the lacquer and guard against dirt, finger prints and watermarks.

It is vital that you do not use any form of metal cleaner on new Matt Black products as this will damage the lacquer.

What Are Matt Black products made from?

90% of our Matt Black items will be made from solid brass, there are some exceptions which are being made from stainless steel, Zinc alloy or Mazac. These products have had a Matt Black powder coat applied to them. Please check individual products to see what base material they are made from.

How is the Matt Black finish produced?

The product is cleaned then put through an industrial oven where a Matt Black powder is then applied and "baking" on the finish to the product. This produces a very hard wearing smooth finish which also help protect and maintain the finish.

Are all Matt Black items the same colour and pattern?

No, some Black finishes are Powder coated which give a much smoother finish and some are Black Japan painted which gives off a much more traditional mottled finish.

Are Matt Black products suitable for outside use?

Yes, since most of the Matt Black items are made from solid brass which is a non-ferrous alloy (it contains no iron) and will not rust when fitted outside. However the powder coating will eventually breakdown.

What happens when the powder coat starts to breakdown?

The brass will now start to become exposed to the air and will start to oxidise, and sometimes flake away.
